Gartner: Open-source business model lets companies control path, pace of future enhancements

According to Gartner, Inc. “The open-source business model enables a company to implement a B2C or B2B commerce solution with no licensing or maintenance costs; customers are able to own the source code for their commerce initiatives, and to control the path and pace of future enhancements.”1

New research from Gartner, Inc notes that the open source business model allows a company to implement a B2B or B2C commerce solution without licensing or maintenance costs. And while it is true that choosing open-source can lead to significant cost savings, it is also true that open-source is good for business in many ways not directly related to cost.  Here are five key benefits of choosing an open-source digital commerce platform:

  1.  Superior quality: open-source software is created by numerous developers collaborating worldwide rather than a handful of developers teaming up in isolation.
  2. Customizability: open-source software can be easily accessed and modified to meet evolving needs. Not so with proprietary software.
  3. Freedom: with open-source, businesses are liberated from vendor lock, and from endless, mandatory hardware and software upgrades.
  4. Security: with closed source software, there is no way to know for certain whether or not the vendor is keeping the software secure or adhering to important standards. With open source, you can see the code for yourself.
  5.  Own Your System: with open-source software, you own your digital commerce system. Period. You can completely control the path and pace of future enhancements.
