Gadget Trends and their Effect on Enterprise Ecommerce

Gadgets that were once cool become obsolete, some technology fades away, some gets replaced by something better, and some people just don’t bother keeping up with the latest and greatest at all. Regardless of how many devices become ubiquitous, there will always be something else in development that will take its place, and with all the ways to access an ecommerce site it doesn’t seem likely that people will ever have a shortage of availability.

Data from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project identifies some interesting ownership numbers that offer a snapshot of the kinds of devices Americans own and use. Yet again, survey information is clearly revealing that the reach and popularity of one gadget in particular towers over the others. I don’t mean to sound like a broken record based on previous posts, or maybe I do, but it’s almost impossible to avoid the increasing impact that the mobile market will have on enterprise ecommerce in the near future.

Cell phones have become the favorite gadget for the majority of young American adults. In fact, 85% of all adults ages 18-34 own a cell phone. As the trend shifts toward improved usability through our mobile devices, more and more people will join the throes of users who are already active in using smart mobile technology. In the meantime, it seems as though the desktop computer will continue to slip from its top position as the most common way to access the Internet.

It will be interesting to watch these numbers transform over the next few years as the popularity of tablets continues to increase and more enterprise ecommerce companies develop a clear path from a device to a payment gateway.
